Mobil™ Give a Drop campaign turns community nominations into practical support

A single drop can go a long way when it responds to a genuine need. This is the thinking behind the Mobil™ Give a Drop campaign, an initiative from Mobil and African Group Lubricants (AG Lubricants) aimed at supporting practical, community-led solutions that can help South Africans build a stronger, more resilient future.

The campaign invites individuals and communities across South Africa to nominate projects, needs and local initiatives that could benefit from targeted support. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, Give a Drop focuses on understanding what communities need and providing support where it can make a practical difference. That approach has now translated into the campaign’s first drop in Springs, Strubenvale, where a young, home-schooled student received a laptop to support her education.

A practical solution to a real need

The 17-year-old was nominated by her grandmother, who recognised that access to a laptop would make a meaningful difference to her studies. As a home-schooled learner, she relies on online resources and research as part of her education, but the cost of purchasing a suitable device was beyond what her family could afford.

The laptop donated by the campaign provides her with an important educational tool, allowing her to conduct research and access resources that support her schooling. She says that one of the challenges of homeschooling is having access to the necessary tools to conduct research and complete her studies effectively.

Her aspirations extend beyond matric. She hopes to continue her studies and ultimately become a kindergarten teacher, with her parents describing the donation as an opportunity to help her work towards that future. For her family, the impact is about removing a practical barrier that could otherwise limit her ability to pursue her education and realise her ambitions.

The support is also intended to have an impact beyond the initial donation. The laptop has been provided with a subscription and can be used by the student on a full-time basis beyond the drop, giving her continued access to the resources she needs as she progresses with her studies.

Giving back where it matters

For AG Lubricants, the first drop demonstrates the principle behind the campaign: meaningful change does not always require a large intervention. Sometimes, providing the right support at the right time can open a door that was previously difficult to access.

Kagiso Donga, IT Systems & Operations Manager at AG Lubricants, says the decision to support the nomination was rooted in the campaign’s objective of building the Mobil™ brand through giving back to communities and responding to needs identified by the people who understand those communities best.

“In this case, the need was clear. The student had the ambition and commitment to continue her education but lacked an essential tool that could help her do so. The laptop helps address that gap while providing a platform for her to continue developing her skills and working towards her longer-term goals,” says Donga.

For AG Lubricants, the message is captured in the idea that a single drop can go a long way, creating momentum. By responding to a specific need, the impact of one intervention can extend into the future, from supporting a learner today to potentially helping her achieve a career that allows her to contribute to the lives of others tomorrow, in terms of what is known as the ripple effect.

Creating a ripple effect

The first drop also highlights the role that individuals and communities can play in creating positive change. As the campaign is built around community nominations, the people closest to local challenges have an opportunity to identify where support could make the greatest difference. The Springs nomination demonstrates how that process can turn an observed need into practical action.

For communities considering participating in the campaign, the message is to look around, identify the needs that matter and consider how a targeted intervention could help. “Be the change you want to see” captures the spirit of the initiative. “The ripple effect of a drop starts small, but its impact can extend much further when it gives someone the tools or opportunity to move forward,” says Donga.

As the campaign continues, the aim is to build on that first drop by supporting more community-led nominations and demonstrating how practical acts of giving can contribute to a stronger and more resilient South Africa.
