As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the management of mud-rush risks and enhance the safety of mineworkers across the South African mining industry, Minerals Council South Africa has hosted a Mud Rush Day of Learning.

The event forms part of the council's commitment to fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge and advancing the industry's Zero Harm journey.

The Day of Learning brought together representatives from mining companies, organised labour, regulators, researchers, technical specialists and other industry stakeholders to exchange experiences, leading practices, case studies and innovative approaches for preventing mud-rush incidents.

Mud rushes remain one of the most significant geotechnical hazards facing certain mining operations. These incidents have the potential to cause serious injuries, fatalities, production disruptions and damage to infrastructure.

Hence, the council stresses that effective management of mud-rush risks requires a combination of sound engineering design, rigorous risk assessment, operational discipline and continuous learning from industry experience.

The programme featured presentations from industry practitioners, academia and technical experts covering recent incidents, lessons learned, risk assessment methodologies, monitoring technologies, engineering controls, operational practices and emergency-preparedness initiatives aimed at preventing mud-rush occurrences and mitigating their consequences.

"This Day of Learning demonstrates the mining industry's commitment to learning from one another and working collectively to eliminate catastrophic risks.

"By openly sharing knowledge, experiences, and proven interventions, we can strengthen our ability to identify, manage, and control mud-rush hazards and ultimately protect the lives of mineworkers,” says Minerals Council head of safety and sustainable development Dushendra Naidoo.

The event further highlighted the importance of leadership, workforce engagement and the adoption of effective controls to address geotechnical risks.

Through collaboration between stakeholders, the Minerals Council says, the industry continues to build a stronger understanding of mud-rush mechanisms and the measures required to prevent future incidents.

Participants were given the opportunity to engage in technical discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions that are expected to contribute towards improved industry practices, stronger risk management capabilities and enhanced safety performance across mining operations.

The initiative aligns with Minerals Council South Africa's vision of a mining industry in which every employee returns home safely every day.

Through continued collaboration, innovation and learning, the sector seeks to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries associated with mud-rush incidents and other occupational hazards, the council says.
