Mariana Minerals rolls out automated inspection robot Spot at Copper One
Further to Mariana Minerals' world's only autonomy-first mine and refinery strategy, the company is implementing Boston Dynamics' quadruped robot, Spot, at its Copper One facility near Moab, in Utah.
While the facility previously relied on operators to manually walk and inspect the plant, the company is now deploying Spot to automate routine inspections, optimise operations, and significantly improve workforce safety.
By transitioning these duties to automation, Mariana Minerals is keeping its workforce away from dangerous areas.
Key impacts and applications of Spot at the facility include hazard mitigation, with Spot removing the need for human operators from hazardous areas, while replacing the need for traditional personal protection equipment or physical guards; and plant-wide inspections, with Spot conducting automated routine inspections across the plant that previously consumed significant operator time, allowing employees to focus on higher-level, value-add tasks.
The implementation of the autonomous inspection robot also supports data collection for high-purity cathode production and the safe navigation of rugged terrain to collect and stream critical environmental data.
Meanwhile, in explaining its approach to full autonomous mining, Mariana Minerals says the global copper supply system is under mounting pressure. "Existing operations are harder to sustain. New sources of supply are more difficult, expensive, and time-consuming to bring online. Meanwhile, demand accelerates from electrification, renewable energy, grid expansion, and industrial growth.
"The combination of geological limits, technical complexity, and long development timelines means supply will struggle to keep pace. Market forecasts anticipate a substantial structural shortfall - some projections suggest a deficit approaching ten-million tons if new capacity fails to materialise quickly enough."
The company explains that the world is faced with a bleak outlook: demand is accelerating while supply struggles to keep pace. Closing this widening gap requires a fundamentally different approach to mining and refining - one built on autonomy, software, and operational intelligence.
"Today, autonomous vehicles navigate cities. We launch and land rockets autonomously. Autonomous weapons will soon define the battlefield, and humanoid robots will soon deliver services in factories and at home. Mariana Copper One is the first mine in the world that will demonstrate what end-to-end autonomy will deliver in mining," the company concludes.
