Energy and Densification Systems (EDS) has developed a portfolio of equipment used in the crushing, milling, liberation and recovery of mineral ores, through the commercial exploitation of various international patents. EDS provides end-to-end solutions for comminution circuits, downstream processing such as gravity/density separation and leaching, and all operations and maintenance related to these solutions.

The company was formed in 2005 to develop, manufacture and market the EDS Multishaft Mill. After years of prototyping and research and development, EDS successfully commercialised the equipment in 2018 and are currently operating on various sites and minerals providing significant overall circuit improvement. This equipment overlaps tertiary crushing and primary milling.

EDS also offers the High-Pressure Slurry Ablation (HPSA) modular mineral liberation platform that uses high-velocity slurry collisions to selectively separate minerals from the host material. The technology improves recovery, reduces energy consumption, and unlocks value across active mineral circuits and legacy mine waste remediation and can be deployed in primary, secondary and regrind milling applications. Developed by DISA Tech, EDS is the authorised DISA agent for the HPSA in sub-Saharan Africa.

EDS is also a partner in a specialised leaching technology which is used to leach and precipitate out various base or precious metals using unique agitation and reagent methods with coarse particles liberated by the Multishaft or HPSA. The solution offers modular plants that can be adapted and scaled for any operation, ensuring lower capital and operational expenditure. EDS operates its own batch testing and warehousing facility in Germiston, Johannesburg, where it tests various products in a bid to optimise the solutions for its clients’ specific needs. The process involves adjusting numerous variables to achieve the best method for the material and minerals concerned and to meet customer output specifications. EDS offerings can be combined with various pieces of equipment to provide a complete processing and handling solution, including multiple feed and materials handling systems, scalpers and pre-crushers, screening equipment as well as classifiers, filter systems and downstream recovery.

Applications encompass a wide variety of industry and product sectors, including mining, energy, steel manufacture, waste reprocessing, environment rehabilitation, agriculture, and general milling.

EDS’s target market is the liberation and recovery of various minerals (including copper, gold, platinum and chrome), coal, coal waste, silica sand, talc, quartzite, clinker, graphite, biomass and diverse mineral and ore waste materials.

EDS offers a compact, efficient, power-saving solution that utilises less energy to produce better-liberated outputs compared to other technologies, leading to lower costs and enhanced productivity. The result is more minerals recovered using less energy and lower cost inputs. The space-saving, compact footprint offers the added benefits of modular, mobility and remote operation. It can also be operated with the use of diesel-driven generators, adding to its flexibility.

The solutions provide environmental benefits at multiple levels, including reducing waste from coal-fired power plants because of finer milling and the resultant reduction in ash production. The mill can also be used to extract value from mineral waste dumps through the recovery of discarded mineral products, further helping to safeguard the environment.
