New South African smelting technology that uses 70% less electricity has reached the commercialisation phase. Domestically advanced ultra-high-dense-media-separation processing is poised to significantly increase the proportion of premium iron-ore produced. A locally developed 2 kW proton exchange membrane electrolyser system has just been commissioned amid strong South African collaboration. These are examples of promising developments that bring with them value-adding potential, and local development of this nature should be given more encouragement.
