Condra recognises oldest crane still in operation after 48 years

Crane manufacturer Condra Crane has announced the winners of a competition to find the company’s oldest working crane.
The competition was launched last year, eight months ahead of the company’s diamond jubilee celebrations last month, to showcase product durability and lower lifetime cost, which Condra highlighted was the result of robust manufacture and crane design more carefully aligned to each application when compared with Far Eastern imports.
First place was awarded to Brakpan-based Heavy Duty Lifting’s Shane Cox and Lizelle Baillie, who entered a 10 t, double-girder electric overhead travelling crane manufactured in Condra’s Elsburg factory 48 years ago.
Baillie and Cox identified their veteran crane from a database of serviced installations.
Technical staff verified the crane as still in use and Condra confirmed that the entry was factory Works Order 1935, the oldest of all submitted entries.
Second place went to a crane commissioned shortly after: Works Order 1970.
Condra received the winners at an open day marking the company’s sixtieth birthday, attended by 185 guests, among them delegates to a complementary event, the Lifting Equipment Engineering Association of South Africa conference.
The event highlighted the viability of upgrading veteran cranes to modern, fit-for-purpose standards, showcasing one of the entries: a refurbished Condra machine manufactured and delivered more than 40 years ago.
It also emphasised the contribution made to machine efficiency by spare parts availability and regular servicing. Condra spares are manufactured locally, obviating the sometimes- lengthy lead times associated with imported parts.
Condra was founded in 1966. In 2008, it moved to its current 9 000 m2 Gosforth Park factory, located on a 22 000 m2 site that allows for ample expansion.
The group comprises eight entities across South Africa, Chile and Bulgaria.
