Canada-based E3 Lithium said on Monday it signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with battery materials maker Epsilon for the potential supply of battery-grade lithium carbonate from its Clearwater project in Alberta.

The MoU, effective September 1, provides a framework for the potential supply of up to 5 000 tons of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually over a five-year period, the company said.

The proposed volumes would represent up to 40% of E3 Lithium's proposed Stage 1 production capacity of 12 000 tonnes a year from the Clearwater Project, the company added.

E3 said that final volumes and commercial terms would be established as the parties progress towards a definitive agreement.

Epsilon, which develops lithium iron phosphate (LFP)-based cathode active materials for lithium-ion batteries, is building a 30 000-tonnes-a-year cathode materials facility in India, with the first phase expected to be completed by early 2028.

"This MoU with Epsilon demonstrates a serious interest and draws a clear path from Alberta brine directly into the battery supply chain," said E3 CEO Chris Doornbos.

Epsilon MD Vikram Handa added that the potential deal would connect Canadian lithium resources with downstream battery material production in India as manufacturers seek to diversify battery raw material supply chains.
