Bearings contract keeps manufacturer casting

STEELING THE SHOW SKF has been awarded a three-year tender to supply bearings to one of South Africa’s prominent steel manufacturers
With the primary focus of maintaining continuous produc-tion at one of South Africa’s prominent steel manufacturers, SKF South Africa has undertaken to fulfil a major threeyear tender to supply a range of SKF tapered roller and metalsspecific bearings to the caster.
“The agreement builds on a customer relationship developed over nearly four decades and supported by a dedicated team,” says SKF Heavy Industries key account manager Shailin Govender.
In line with the tender requirements, the global bearings, seals, lubrication systems and related services provider will supply its new generation E9 BT4 four-row tapered roller bearings and VA9B1 metals-specific bearings. Both are “critical” to caster and reduction mill applications, and purpose-built to withstand the unique challenges of the casting environment.
Govender tells Engineering News that quantity and frequency demand for these bearings will vary based on the plant’s requirements, and that the company will supply these products as and when needed by maintaining local stock levels.
“The multimillion-rand contract reinforces SKF’s commitment to supporting sustainable local steel manufacturing,” he adds.
Magic in the Making
The bearings – designed to prevent unplanned downtime and “catastrophic” machinery failure – are manufactured using “superior high-grade steel” in plants across SKF’s global manufacturing footprint.
SKF says the bearings' robust construction ensures reliable performance, while the cage design is specifically optimised for low-speed rotation, delivering consistent efficiency in continuous casting machines.
“Bearings that combine resilience, precision, and long-term operational reliability highlight SKF’s commitment to providing the metals industry with quality bearings,” states Govender.
The tapered roller bearings offer increased dynamic load ratings of up to 23% and can handle high loads without compromising productivity or safety.
SKF bearings’ optimised design ensures low-friction torque, reduced noise and vibration, and improved running accuracy at higher speeds.
The combination of advanced materials and precise heat treatment result in bearings with high fatigue life, enhanced contamination resistance and “superior” dimensional stability.
“They can also be customised to meet specific requirements, such as elevated temperatures or vibratory conditions, making them a versatile solution across demanding applications,” highlights Govender.
He adds that the company’s balancing local competitiveness with global “product excellence” was a decisive factor in winning the contract.
The inclusion of distributor 24/7 support and official SKF supply through onsite, vendor-managed inventory further minimises planning disruptions and administrative burdens.
“SKF actively engages with the local steel industry to maintain market presence, while our dedicated research and development team allow us to stay ahead of global standards,” concludes Govender.
