Washington DC

Washington DC is the capital city of the United States, situated as a federal district between the states of Maryland and Virginia along the Potomac River. It is not part of any state and operates under a unique system of federal oversight combined with limited local governance. The city is the seat of the three branches of the US federal government, including the White House, Congress and the Supreme Court. Its population is concentrated in a relatively small urban footprint, with a much larger metropolitan area extending into neighbouring states. The city's economy centres on government administration, policy institutions, law firms, lobbying organisations and international bodies such as embassies and multilateral agencies. It hosts headquarters or major offices for the Office of the United States Trade Representative and other agencies that shape trade and tariff policy affecting countries including South Africa. Washington DC carries outsized political and economic significance because decisions made there on tariffs, trade agreements and foreign policy ripple across global markets. It regularly features in African business coverage as the site of trade negotiations, sanctions decisions and diplomatic engagements. The city was established in the late eighteenth century as a purpose-built capital, planned to be neutral ground between northern and southern states. Its role as a global policy hub has grown steadily since, particularly through the twentieth century.
