US Export-Import Bank

The US Export-Import Bank (United States Export-Import Bank) is the official export credit agency of the United States government. Established in 1934, the bank's mandate is to support American jobs by facilitating the export of US goods and services through the provision of financing, loan guarantees and credit insurance to foreign buyers. The bank operates as an independent federal agency and is governed by a board of directors appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Its programmes are designed to fill gaps in private-sector financing, particularly for large capital projects and transactions in emerging markets where commercial lenders may be reluctant to extend credit. The US Export-Import Bank plays a strategic role in advancing US economic and foreign-policy interests, including support for critical minerals and infrastructure projects that align with national security objectives. It competes with export credit agencies from other countries, notably China, in financing major international deals. The bank has faced periodic political debate over its reauthorisation and the scope of its activities. In recent years it has refocused on countering Chinese influence in Africa and other regions by backing projects that source American equipment and services. The bank's involvement in a transaction signals official US government backing and can be a catalyst for mobilising additional private and multilateral finance.
