Unki

Unki is a platinum group metals mine located in the Shurugwi district of the Midlands province in Zimbabwe. It is owned and operated by Valterra Platinum, formerly the platinum division of Anglo American, making it one of the few foreign-owned mines operating within Zimbabwe's mining sector. The mine extracts ore containing platinum, palladium, rhodium and associated metals such as chrome, gold and nickel from a section of the Great Dyke geological formation. Unki produces concentrate that is processed further at converter and refinery operations, contributing to Valterra Platinum's overall platinum group metals output alongside its South African operations including Mogalakwena, Amandelbult and Mototolo. The mine is significant to Zimbabwe's economy as a source of export earnings, employment and foreign investment, and it operates under local ownership requirements associated with Zimbabwe's indigenisation framework. Unki has invested in renewable energy initiatives to reduce reliance on the national grid and address power supply constraints common in Zimbabwe. The operation has undergone expansions since its commissioning to increase throughput and extend its operating life. Unki remains a strategic asset in the broader platinum group metals industry, which supplies materials used in autocatalysts, fuel cells and other emerging energy transition technologies.
