Transnet Engineering

Transnet Engineering is a division of Transnet, South Africa's state-owned freight transport and logistics company. The division specialises in the maintenance, repair, overhaul and manufacture of rolling stock and other rail equipment for Transnet's freight rail operations. Transnet Engineering operates a network of workshops and facilities across South Africa, providing engineering services for locomotives, wagons and other rail assets. The division plays a critical role in sustaining the operational availability of Transnet Freight Rail's fleet, which transports coal, iron ore, manganese and general freight across the country's rail network. Transnet Engineering also manufactures new rolling stock components and undertakes refurbishment projects to extend the life of existing assets. The division has historically been involved in localisation initiatives, supporting South Africa's industrial policy objectives by building capacity in rail manufacturing and engineering. Transnet Engineering's performance directly affects the reliability and efficiency of South Africa's rail freight system, which is essential for the movement of export commodities and domestic goods. The division has faced challenges related to ageing infrastructure, skills shortages and financial constraints within the broader Transnet group. Transnet Engineering remains a key player in South Africa's rail engineering sector, with its activities closely watched by mining companies, exporters and logistics users who depend on reliable rail services.

ON TRAXX: It’s been a difficult journey, but Transnet last month celebrated a fleet-renewal milestone when the 200th Traxx 23E locomotive rolled off the assembly line. The locomotive is part of 240 such units that Transnet has procured as part of its troubled rail modernisation programme. Following a 2023 settlement agreement with project partner Alstom (which acquired original contractor Bombardier), Transnet Engineering initiated a 24/5 shift pattern to ramp up production. The project achieved its best-ever performance in 2024, delivering 43 locomotives in a single year and is now said to be on track for completing the delivery of the remaining 40 locomotives by June 2026.
