Steelmaking Coal

Steelmaking coal is a high-grade metallurgical coal used primarily as a key raw material in the production of steel through the blast furnace process. Also known as coking coal or metallurgical coal, it differs from thermal coal in that it possesses specific properties—including low ash content, low sulphur, and appropriate plasticity—that enable it to be transformed into coke when heated in the absence of air. Coke serves as both a fuel and a reducing agent in blast furnaces, where iron ore is smelted to produce pig iron, the precursor to steel. Steelmaking coal is therefore essential to the global steel industry, which underpins construction, automotive manufacturing, infrastructure development and heavy engineering. Major producing regions include Australia, the United States, Canada and Russia, with seaborne trade concentrated in the Asia-Pacific market. Prices for steelmaking coal are influenced by steel demand, supply disruptions, freight costs and environmental policies affecting both coal mining and steel production. The commodity is typically sold under long-term contracts or through spot markets, with benchmark pricing often set through quarterly negotiations between major miners and steelmakers. As the steel industry faces pressure to decarbonise, steelmaking coal producers are exploring lower-emission technologies, though metallurgical coal remains integral to conventional blast furnace operations. The sector has seen consolidation in recent years, with large diversified mining groups and specialist coal producers competing for market share in a capital-intensive and cyclical industry.
