South African Civil Aviation Authority

The South African Civil Aviation Authority is the statutory body responsible for regulating civil aviation safety and security in South Africa. Established under the Civil Aviation Act of 2009, the authority operates under the mandate of the Department of Transport to ensure compliance with international aviation standards and promote safe air travel. Its jurisdiction covers all civil aviation activities within South African airspace and at airports throughout the country. The authority's key functions include licensing and certification of aircraft, pilots and aviation personnel, oversight of air operators and maintenance organisations, regulation of airworthiness standards, and enforcement of aviation safety regulations. It also manages the civil aviation accident and incident investigation process in coordination with other agencies. The organisation works closely with the International Civil Aviation Organization to align South African aviation standards with global best practices. Air Traffic and Navigation Services, while a separate state-owned entity, operates under the regulatory framework established by the authority. The South African Civil Aviation Authority plays a critical role in maintaining the country's aviation safety record and supporting the growth of the domestic and regional aviation industry. It is funded through a combination of government appropriations and fees levied on aviation industry participants.
