Shanghai Gold Exchange

The Shanghai Gold Exchange is China's national exchange for physical precious metals trading, located in Shanghai. Established in 2002, it is the world's largest physical gold exchange by trading volume and serves as the primary platform for gold price discovery in the Chinese market. The exchange operates under the supervision of the People's Bank of China and facilitates spot trading, deferred delivery and physical delivery of gold, silver, platinum and other precious metals. Membership includes commercial banks, precious metals producers, refiners, jewellery manufacturers and institutional investors. The exchange introduced the Shanghai Gold benchmark price in renminbi in 2016, providing an Asia-based alternative to London and New York pricing mechanisms. It plays a central role in China's strategy to internationalise the renminbi and establish greater influence over global precious metals pricing. Trading volumes have grown substantially since its founding, reflecting China's position as the world's largest gold consumer and a major producer. The exchange's physical delivery model distinguishes it from futures-focused platforms such as the Shanghai Futures Exchange, with which it coexists in China's commodities market infrastructure. Its pricing and trading data are closely watched by global bullion markets as indicators of Asian demand.
