Sandsloot

Sandsloot is an opencast platinum group metals (PGMs) mine forming part of the Mogalakwena complex, located in the Limpopo province of South Africa. It is operated by Valterra Platinum, formerly part of Anglo American's platinum business. The mine extracts ore from the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex, one of the world's richest sources of platinum, palladium, rhodium and associated metals. Sandsloot's output feeds into Mogalakwena's processing and refining chain, which supplies PGMs used in autocatalysts, electronics and, increasingly, hydrogen fuel cell technology. The operation uses large-scale open-pit mining methods typical of the shallow, flat-lying orebodies found in this part of the Bushveld Complex. Mogalakwena, of which Sandsloot is a key component, is among the largest open-pit PGM mines globally by production volume. The mine has operated for decades, growing through successive expansions as demand for platinum group metals rose with vehicle emissions regulation and industrial applications. Its continued operation is significant to South Africa's mining sector and to the Limpopo regional economy, providing employment and contributing to export earnings. Sandsloot has featured in industry discussion around the future of platinum demand amid the shift toward electric vehicles and growing interest in critical minerals and hydrogen applications.
