Resolution Copper

Resolution Copper is a mining company developing a large-scale underground copper project in Arizona, United States. The company is a joint venture equally owned by Rio Tinto and BHP, two of the world's largest mining groups. Resolution Copper's flagship project is located near the town of Superior in Pinal County, Arizona, and is expected to become one of the largest copper mines in North America once operational. The deposit contains an estimated 1.8-billion tonnes of ore and could supply about 25% of US copper demand. The project involves the construction of deep underground shafts, including No. 9 Shaft and No. 10 Shaft, to access the orebody located more than 2 100 m below the surface. Copper from the mine is classified as a critical mineral by the US government due to its importance in renewable energy, electric vehicles and national infrastructure. The project has faced environmental and cultural heritage challenges, particularly concerning the Oak Flat area, which is sacred to the San Carlos Apache Tribe. Resolution Copper has invested billions of dollars in exploration, engineering and community engagement since the joint venture was formed in 2001. The company works with contractors such as Redpath USA and Oddonetto Construction on shaft-sinking and underground development activities.
