Powder River Basin

The Powder River Basin is a large geological and sedimentary basin in the United States, spanning north-eastern Wyoming and south-eastern Montana. It is one of the world's most significant coal-producing regions, historically supplying a substantial share of US thermal coal from large surface mines. Beyond coal, the basin hosts considerable deposits of uranium and coalbed methane, making it a focus for energy-sector exploration and production of various kinds. Uranium occurs in sandstone-hosted roll-front deposits that are amenable to in-situ recovery mining, a lower-impact extraction method that dissolves uranium from the host rock using fluids pumped through wells. The region's uranium potential has drawn renewed interest from exploration companies amid rising global demand linked to nuclear energy, including small modular reactors. Wyoming's established mining infrastructure, mineral rights regime and skilled workforce support ongoing resource development in the basin. The Powder River Basin's economic importance to Wyoming is considerable, underpinning state revenue through severance taxes and royalties. Historically, coal mining in the basin expanded rapidly from the 1970s as utilities sought lower-sulphur alternatives to eastern US coal. Uranium mining in the area dates back decades, with periods of boom and decline tied to global uranium prices and nuclear power demand. The basin continues to attract junior and major resource companies evaluating both legacy and new energy minerals projects.
