Pilgangoora

Pilgangoora is a hard-rock lithium and tantalum mine located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is owned and operated by Pilbara Minerals (PLS), one of the world's largest independent hard-rock lithium producers. The operation produces spodumene concentrate, a key feedstock for lithium chemicals used in battery manufacturing for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Pilgangoora hosts one of the largest known hard-rock lithium deposits globally, supporting substantial processing capacity through multiple expansion stages. The mine has grown through successive plant upgrades since its development, increasing output to meet rising demand from battery supply chains. Its production is sold mainly to customers in Asia, including China, South Korea and Japan, under offtake agreements. The operation is significant to the global critical minerals sector as part of the broader push to secure supply of materials for the energy transition. Pilgangoora's performance and expansion plans are closely watched as indicators of lithium market conditions, given price volatility in the sector. Chief executive Dale Henderson has overseen recent phases of growth and cost management at the operation. The mine began production in 2018 and has since become a cornerstone asset in Western Australia's lithium industry.
