Optimum Colliery

Optimum Colliery is a coal mine located near Middelburg in the Mpumalanga coalfields of South Africa, historically supplying thermal coal to Eskom's power stations, including Hendrina Power Station, under long-term coal supply agreements. The colliery gained prominence for its association with the Gupta family, whose Tegeta Exploration and Resources acquired the mine from Glencore in a deal that later became central to South Africa's state capture inquiries. Operations at Optimum have included both opencast and underground methods, with dragline equipment used for overburden removal in surface sections. The mine's output has also supported export coal volumes moved through Transnet's rail network to Richards Bay Coal Terminal for shipment to international markets. Optimum Colliery was placed under business rescue amid financial difficulties linked to disputed Eskom contract pricing and penalties, drawing scrutiny of governance and procurement practices. Ownership of the colliery has changed hands multiple times since the Gupta-era controversies, with entities such as Liberty Coal featuring in subsequent restructuring efforts. The mine sits alongside other Mpumalanga assets, including Kwagga Mine, within a coalfield region critical to South Africa's baseload electricity generation.
