Langer Heinrich Mine

The Langer Heinrich Mine is an open-pit uranium mine located in the Namib Desert in Namibia, about 80 km from the port city of Walvis Bay. It is owned and operated by Paladin, an Australian-listed uranium producer. The mine extracts uranium-bearing calcrete ore, which is processed on site into uranium oxide concentrate for export to nuclear power utilities internationally. Langer Heinrich was one of the first new uranium mines to be developed globally in the twenty-first century, having started production in 2007. It was placed on care and maintenance in 2018 amid depressed uranium prices, before Paladin recommissioned the operation as prices recovered on renewed global interest in nuclear energy. The mine forms part of Namibia's significant uranium mining sector, which makes the country one of the world's leading uranium producers alongside Kazakhstan, Canada and Australia. Namibia's favourable geology, established mining infrastructure and mining-friendly regulatory environment have made it an attractive destination for uranium investment. Langer Heinrich remains a key asset in Paladin's portfolio and a notable contributor to Namibia's export earnings and employment in the mining sector.
