Katie Jackson

Katie Jackson is chief executive of Rio Tinto's copper business, a position created in August 2025 when CEO Simon Trott restructured the mining major into three product groups. In this role she oversees Rio Tinto's global copper portfolio, including the Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine in Mongolia, the Kennecott mine and smelter in Utah, the Resolution copper project in Arizona and the Nuton bioleaching technology business. Jackson has been central to advancing the long-delayed Resolution project in Arizona, a joint venture between Rio Tinto (55%) and BHP (45%), following a federal land exchange that unlocked further development after years of legal opposition from the San Carlos Apache Tribe. She has spoken publicly on the challenging economics of copper smelting in the United States, on US tariff and critical-minerals policy, and on the commercialisation of Rio Tinto's Nuton bioleaching technology, including its deployment at the Johnson Camp mine in Arizona and a supply partnership with Amazon Web Services. Jackson also leads Rio Tinto's side of negotiations with the Mongolian government over the commercial terms, loan interest rate and management fees attached to the Oyu Tolgoi project, in which Mongolia holds a 34% stake. She has overseen operational decisions at Oyu Tolgoi, including a 2025 shift in underground mine planning following licence-transfer delays involving Entrée Resources. Jackson has also addressed safety matters at Rio Tinto's operations, including a fatality at the Kennecott mine.
