Johannesburg Stock Exchange

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) is the principal securities exchange in South Africa and the largest of its kind on the African continent. It provides a platform for the listing and trading of equities, bonds, derivatives and other financial instruments, serving both domestic and international investors. The exchange's main benchmark index, the FTSE/JSE All Share Index, tracks the broad performance of listed companies, while sector-specific indices such as the FTSE/JSE Resources index capture the performance of mining and materials companies, including platinum-group metals producers with operations in the Bushveld Complex and North West province. The JSE operates under regulatory oversight aligned with South African financial-markets legislation and is supervised by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority. Its listings span sectors including mining, banking, retail, telecommunications and industrials, reflecting the diversified structure of the South African economy. Major mining companies such as Sibanye-Stillwater and Valterra Platinum trade on the exchange, alongside numerous other resources and industrial firms. Market movements on the JSE are closely watched as an indicator of investor sentiment towards South African assets and the broader economy. The exchange has a history stretching back to 1887, established during the gold rush era on the Witwatersrand, making it one of the oldest exchanges in the emerging-market world. Over time it has modernised its trading infrastructure, adopting electronic trading systems and expanding its product range to include exchange-traded funds and derivatives. The JSE remains a key barometer for capital flows into and out of South Africa, particularly for commodity-linked and mining-sector equities.
