International Monetary Fund

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is a global organisation of 190-plus member countries established to promote international monetary cooperation, exchange-rate stability and balanced economic growth. Headquartered in Washington, DC, it provides policy advice, technical assistance and financial support to member states facing balance-of-payments difficulties. The IMF is governed by a board of executive directors representing member countries, with voting power weighted by financial contributions, and is led by a managing director. It regularly conducts Article IV consultations, assessing member economies' fiscal, monetary and structural policies, including Nigeria's. The fund often recommends reforms such as subsidy removal, exchange-rate liberalisation and fiscal consolidation, advice that has shaped Nigerian policy debates on fuel subsidies, inflation and poverty. It works alongside the World Bank, though the two have distinct mandates, with the IMF focused on macroeconomic stability rather than long-term development financing. The IMF's assessments and loan conditions can be politically sensitive, particularly where they involve austerity measures affecting food security and inequality. It was established in 1944 at the Bretton Woods Conference alongside the World Bank, initially to oversee the post-war international monetary system. Its role has since expanded to include crisis lending, surveillance and capacity development across advanced, emerging and developing economies. The organisation remains a key reference point in coverage of Nigeria's economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu's administration.
