Howard Lutnick

Howard Lutnick is an American businessman who serves as chairman and chief executive of Cantor Fitzgerald, a financial services firm, and was nominated by President-elect Donald Trump in November 2024 to serve as US Secretary of Commerce. He is a US national who has spent his career in financial services and capital markets. Lutnick joined Cantor Fitzgerald in 1983 and rose to become president and CEO in 1991, later adding the chairman role. He led the firm through its recovery after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, which killed 658 of the company's 960 New York employees, including his brother. Under his leadership, Cantor Fitzgerald expanded into investment banking, real estate, and other financial services. Lutnick has been involved in various business ventures and investments, including in the commodities and mining sectors. His nomination as Commerce Secretary positions him to oversee US trade policy, export controls, and critical minerals strategy at a time of heightened focus on supply chain security. He is known for his dealmaking experience and close ties to the Trump administration. Lutnick's background in finance and capital markets has made him a recurring figure in business and policy coverage, particularly regarding US economic and trade matters.
