Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is a gravity dam on the Blue Nile river in north-western Ethiopia, located in the Benishangul-Gumuz region near the border with Sudan. It is Africa's largest hydroelectric power plant and the world's seventh-largest by installed capacity, with a planned generation capacity of 5 150 MW from 13 Francis turbines. The dam's reservoir, with a total storage capacity of 74-billion cubic metres, is designed to regulate Blue Nile flows and provide year-round power generation for Ethiopia's domestic consumption and export to neighbouring countries. Construction began in 2011 under a design-build contract awarded to Italian contractor Salini Impregilo, with the project financed primarily through Ethiopian government bonds and treasury allocations. The dam stands 145 m high and stretches 1 780 m across the river, creating a reservoir that extends approximately 246 km upstream. Its development has been a source of prolonged diplomatic tension with downstream riparian states Egypt and Sudan, which have raised concerns about water security, the filling schedule and the potential impact on Nile flows that sustain agriculture and drinking water supplies. Ethiopia views the dam as essential to its economic development and energy security, arguing that hydropower generation is a non-consumptive use that will not significantly reduce downstream flows. Filling of the reservoir commenced in 2020, with the first two turbines commissioned in 2022 and additional units brought online progressively. The project represents a landmark infrastructure investment for Ethiopia and a focal point in broader negotiations over equitable use of Nile Basin water resources.
