Finland

Finland is a Nordic country in Northern Europe, bordered by Sweden to the west, Norway to the north and Russia to the east, with Estonia across the Gulf of Finland to the south. The capital and largest city is Helsinki. Finland has a population of about 5.5-million and is one of the most sparsely populated countries in Europe. The economy is highly industrialised and diversified, with key sectors including forestry, paper and pulp manufacturing, metals and engineering, electronics and information technology. Finland is a major exporter of paper, paperboard, sawn timber and wood products, supported by extensive boreal forests that cover more than 70% of the country. The currency is the euro, which Finland adopted in 1999 as a founding member of the eurozone. The country operates as a parliamentary republic and is a member of the European Union, having joined in 1995, as well as the United Nations, the Nordic Council and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Finland is recognised for its high standard of living, strong education system and advanced technology sector. The nation gained independence from Russia in 1917 and has since developed into one of the world's most stable and prosperous economies.
