Ember

Ember is an independent energy think-tank focused on accelerating the global transition from coal to clean electricity. Headquartered in London, the organisation conducts data-driven research and analysis on electricity generation, emissions and energy policy across more than 200 countries and territories. Ember publishes regular reports on global electricity trends, tracking the growth of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, the decline of coal-fired generation and progress towards climate targets. Its flagship publications include the Global Electricity Review and the European Electricity Review, which provide granular data on power-sector emissions and generation mix. The organisation's work is widely cited by policymakers, journalists and researchers seeking authoritative statistics on the energy transition. Ember also engages in policy advocacy, supporting governments and international bodies in designing strategies to phase out fossil fuel generation. It operates as a non-profit and is funded by philanthropic foundations. Ember was established in 2021, emerging from an earlier initiative called Sandbag, which had focused on European climate and energy policy since 2008. The organisation's analysis frequently informs discussions at international climate conferences and in national energy planning processes.
