DMPR

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources was a South African government department responsible for regulating and promoting the country's mining and petroleum sectors. Its mandate encompassed policy development, licensing, compliance and the administration of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, which governs the allocation and exploitation of mineral and petroleum rights. The department played a central role in shaping South Africa's resource governance framework, balancing economic development with transformation objectives, environmental stewardship and community interests. It oversaw the granting of prospecting and mining rights, monitored health and safety standards in mines and facilitated beneficiation and value-addition initiatives. The department also engaged with industry stakeholders, including major mining houses, junior exploration companies and organised labour, to address sector challenges such as investment climate, regulatory certainty and skills development. In 2009, the department was split into two separate entities: the Department of Mineral Resources and the Department of Energy, reflecting the distinct policy and operational demands of each sector. The mineral resources portfolio continued under the new department, which was later merged with the Department of Energy in 2019 to form the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. Throughout its existence, the department was instrumental in advancing South Africa's position as a leading global producer of platinum, gold, chromium and other strategic minerals.
