Cornwall

Cornwall is a ceremonial county and historic region located in the south-western peninsula of England, United Kingdom. It is bordered by Devon to the east and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and English Channel on three sides, giving it a distinctive maritime character. The county town is Truro, which also serves as Cornwall's only city and administrative centre. Cornwall has a population of about 570,000 and covers an area of approximately 3,500 square kilometres, making it one of England's more sparsely populated counties. The region has a long and significant mining heritage, particularly in tin and copper extraction, which dominated its economy from the Bronze Age through to the early twentieth century. At its peak during the nineteenth century, Cornwall was the world's leading producer of tin and copper, with thousands of mines operating across the landscape. The decline of mining in the late 1800s and early 1900s led to widespread emigration and economic hardship, though the industry left a lasting legacy in the form of engine houses, mine shafts and cultural traditions. Today, Cornwall's economy is driven primarily by tourism, agriculture, fishing and renewable energy, though there has been renewed interest in reviving mining operations at historic sites. The region retains a distinct cultural identity, with its own recognised minority language, Cornish, and a strong sense of regional heritage. Cornwall's mining landscape, including parts of the historic tin and copper mining areas, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006 in recognition of its global influence on mining technology and practice.
