Coal Bed Methane

Coal bed methane (CBM) is natural gas trapped within coal seams, adsorbed onto the surface of coal rather than held in conventional porous reservoirs. It is extracted by drilling wells into coal deposits and reducing water pressure within the seam, which releases the gas for collection and processing. CBM is composed primarily of methane, with the same basic chemistry as conventional natural gas, allowing it to be used for power generation, industrial heating and as a feedstock for liquefied natural gas production. It has become an important unconventional gas resource in countries with large coal reserves, including Australia, China, the United States and parts of Central Asia including Mongolia. Development of CBM requires specialised drilling and dewatering techniques distinct from conventional gas extraction, and projects are often pursued by junior and mid-tier energy companies seeking to monetise coalfields. The resource can provide a domestic energy source for regions lacking conventional gas infrastructure, supporting baseload power and energy security objectives. Environmental considerations include the management of produced water and fugitive methane emissions, since methane is a potent greenhouse gas. CBM exploration and production activity is often linked to broader coalfield development and mining safety, as methane drainage can also reduce explosion risks in underground coal mines. Interest in CBM has grown alongside efforts to diversify gas supply and reduce reliance on imported liquefied natural gas. The industry remains a smaller segment of the global gas market compared with conventional and shale gas production, but it continues to attract investment in regions with underexploited coal resources.
