China Baowu Steel

China Baowu Steel Group is a Chinese state-owned steel producer and the largest steelmaker in the world by output. It is headquartered in Shanghai and operates under the supervision of China's State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission. The group was formed through the merger of Baosteel Group and Wuhan Iron and Steel Corporation, consolidating China's steel sector. Its core business spans steel manufacturing, mining, trading and resource development, supplying construction, automotive and manufacturing industries across China and export markets. Baowu has pursued overseas investment in iron-ore assets to secure raw-material supply, including a stake in the Simandou project in Guinea, one of the world's largest untapped high-grade iron-ore deposits. Through this involvement it partners with companies such as Rio Tinto and Chinalco in developing Guinean iron-ore resources. The group's scale gives it significant influence over global iron-ore demand and pricing. It employs several hundred thousand people across its subsidiaries and production bases. Baowu's expansion reflects Beijing's broader strategy of securing long-term resource access for its steel industry. The company continues to feature in coverage of African mining investment due to its Simandou interests.
