Building Information Modelling

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a digital process for creating and managing information about a building or infrastructure asset throughout its design, construction and operational life. It uses three-dimensional, data-rich models that integrate architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical information into a single collaborative environment. BIM allows architects, engineers, contractors and owners to visualise designs, detect clashes before construction, estimate costs and plan schedules more accurately. It is widely applied in commercial buildings, infrastructure projects, and increasingly in conjunction with digital twins and artificial intelligence to monitor asset performance after completion. Software providers such as RIB Software develop platforms that support BIM workflows, alongside other established vendors in the construction technology market. Adoption of BIM is more advanced in regions such as Western Europe, North America and parts of Asia-Pacific, often driven by government mandates requiring its use on public infrastructure projects. The technology improves collaboration between project stakeholders, reduces errors and rework, and supports more sustainable design decisions through better data visibility. Its maturity varies globally, with some markets still relying on traditional two-dimensional drawings and manual coordination. Skills development remains a challenge, as effective use of BIM requires training across design, engineering and construction disciplines. Originating from computer-aided design advances in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, BIM has evolved from a drafting tool into a broader framework for digital construction management.
