Bassirou Diomaye Faye

Bassirou Diomaye Faye is the President of Senegal, having assumed office in April 2024. He is a Senegalese politician and former tax inspector who rose to prominence as part of the opposition movement against the previous administration. Faye's path to the presidency was marked by his imprisonment alongside opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, from which he was released just days before the presidential election. At 44 years old at the time of his inauguration, he became Africa's youngest elected head of state. His political platform emphasised sovereignty, economic reform and anti-corruption measures, resonating with Senegalese youth and those seeking change from established political structures. Faye's election represented a significant shift in Senegalese politics, as he campaigned on promises to renegotiate mining and energy contracts with foreign companies and to pursue greater economic independence. His administration has focused on reviewing Senegal's relationships with international partners, including France and China, as the country seeks to maximise benefits from its emerging oil and gas sector. Faye's presidency occurs during a period of regional instability in the Sahel, positioning Senegal as a key democratic anchor in West Africa. His background in tax administration has informed his approach to fiscal policy and resource governance. Since taking office, he has engaged with various international leaders and participated in discussions on renewable energy, artificial intelligence and Africa's development trajectory.
