Bakkie

Bakkie is the South African term for a light commercial vehicle with an open cargo bed, known elsewhere as a pickup truck or utility vehicle. The word derives from Afrikaans and has become the standard term used across South Africa for this vehicle category, regardless of make or model. Bakkies are among the most popular vehicles in South Africa and across sub-Saharan Africa, valued for their versatility in both commercial and personal use. They are widely used in agriculture, construction, mining support services and small business operations, as well as for recreational purposes and family transport. The South African bakkie market is highly competitive, with major manufacturers including Toyota, Ford, Isuzu, Nissan and Volkswagen offering a range of models from single-cab workhorses to double-cab lifestyle vehicles. Bakkies typically feature rear-wheel or four-wheel drive configurations and are prized for their durability, load-carrying capacity and ability to handle rough terrain. The segment represents a significant portion of new vehicle sales in South Africa, often dominating monthly sales charts. Popular models such as the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max have achieved iconic status in the market, with strong brand loyalty among buyers.
