Africa's significant mineral potential presents substantial opportunities for new mining investment, but converting geological discoveries into viable mining projects remains a complex and capital-intensive process.

The challenges of financing early-stage exploration, reducing geological uncertainty and establishing effective partnerships will be examined during a Creamer Media webinar, hosted in partnership with Investing in African Mining Indaba, on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 14:00 SAST.

Titled “Who Really De-risks Exploration? Rethinking Partnerships to Build Africa's Exploration Pipeline”, the webinar will bring together representatives from the mining industry, junior exploration companies and geological institutions to discuss how Africa can strengthen its exploration pipeline and attract investment into new mineral discoveries.

Early-stage exploration carries significant financial and technical risks, often making it difficult for junior exploration companies to secure the capital needed to advance promising mineral prospects.

While geological data, exploration technologies and technical studies can help reduce uncertainty, the question of who should carry the financial risks associated with mineral discovery remains central to unlocking new investment.

The webinar will examine how governments, established mining companies, junior explorers, investors and technical specialists can work together to overcome these challenges.

Key discussion areas will include:

  • The financial risks associated with early-stage exploration and how these can be shared.
  • The challenges junior explorers face in attracting investors and strategic partners.
  • The role of geological data and technology in reducing exploration uncertainty.
  • Opportunities for major mining companies to support and collaborate with junior explorers.
  • Innovative financing approaches and partnerships to accelerate mineral exploration and project development.

The discussion will feature representatives from:

  • Minerals Council South Africa, providing insight into the policy, regulatory and investment challenges facing the exploration sector.
  • Council for Geoscience, addressing the role of geological information, data accessibility and public-sector initiatives in reducing exploration risk.
  • Orion Minerals, sharing the practical challenges and opportunities associated with advancing exploration projects and developing partnerships.

The webinar will be facilitated by Laura Nicholson, Industry Director at Investing in African Mining Indaba.

With growing demand for minerals essential to industrial development, infrastructure and emerging technologies, strengthening Africa's exploration pipeline is an important consideration for the continent's long-term mining investment prospects.

The discussion will explore what needs to change to move more mineral discoveries towards commercially viable projects, and how stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors can help unlock this potential.
