JSE-listed Wesizwe Platinum has informed shareholders that the Bakubung platinum mine concentrator plant, in the North West, has been placed on care and maintenance while the company prioritises underground infrastructure development and the completion of an optimisation study.

The company says the decision aligns processing activities with the timing of underground stoping and the availability of sufficient sustainable ore feed. Appropriate maintenance and preservation activities will continue during this period to safeguard the plant and associated infrastructure.

The company explains that the timing of the plant’s recommissioning will be informed by the progress of underground development and the outcome of the optimisation study.

In March, Wesizwe announced its decision to adopt a new production strategy for its Bakubung mine to enhance long-term value.

The company said it had decided to halt its previously adopted phased ramp-up approach, including a one-million-tonne-a-year production strategy, and will instead pursue a revised development strategy based on a single-stage ramp-up to a 3.5-million-tonne-a-year operation.
