Voith PowerDrive Mining: Electrify the conveyor, invest smarter
Voith Turbo sales support specialist Sebastian Strauss and Director Service Sales Africa Hamresin Archary spoke to Engineering News & Mining Weekly during the Electra Mining Africa event, held in Johannesburg from 7 to 11 September 2026. Camerawork: Shadwyn Dickinson. Editing: Miko Moodley.
At this year’s Electra Mining exhibition in Johannesburg Voith will launch PowerDrive Mining, its first electric drive system for mining belt conveyors. The solution integrates all key drivetrain components with a dedicated control concept into one coordinated system. This holistic approach significantly reduces integration risks and coordination delays for the customer.
The solution features BeltControl, a controller specifically designed for the requirements of belt conveyor systems that ensures smooth start-ups, harmonised ramp-ups, and reliable multi-drive coordination. This reduces wear on belts and steel structures.
With one accountable partner and one integrated system, the benefits for the customer are significant. Interface risks such as communication issues, compatibility problems, and unclear responsibilities are virtually eliminated. Instead of coordinating multiple vendors, operators benefit from streamlined processes and a system engineered to work seamlessly from the outset.
PowerDrive Mining delivers a compelling value proposition with its competitive investment cost and superior price-performance ratio. The material-optimised motor design and the use of cost-attractive components ensure that robustness and performance are maintained, even as costs are kept in check. As a result, PowerDrive Mining typically achieves a purchase price around 30% below the market benchmark for comparable conveyor drive solutions. This makes it an appealing choice for mining operators seeking to maximise their return on investment without compromising on reliability or operational excellence.
Additionally, PowerDrive Mining is engineered to streamline the installation and commissioning process. The system arrives preassembled and factory-tested, ensuring that all components are fully functional and compatible before reaching the site. This eliminates the need for extensive on-site assembly and troubleshooting, substantially reducing the risk of delays or unexpected issues.
With no shaft alignment or relubrication required, installation becomes a straightforward process. The pre-parameterised controller means that the system is ready to operate upon arrival, with all settings optimised for immediate use.
Overall PowerDrive Mining is a cost-attractive, powerful, electrical conveyor drive and control system that is fully integrated for streamlined installation, improved reliability and higher efficiency, all while minimising interface risks.
