US monazite developer Atlantic Strategic Minerals has confirmed a technically viable and rapid pathway to develop a domestic US rare earths processing facility from mineral sands.

The company's feasibility study on a proposed monazite project outlines competitive operating costs, established processing pathways and access to prospective markets.

Monazite is a rare earths-bearing material.

The study finds a demonstration facility to produce up to 1 000 t/y of monazite concentrate from existing byproduct streams can become operational within the next 12 months.

Further expansion opportunities could increase the plant's production capacity to about 5 000 t/y through plant upgrades and third-party feedstock processing.

Atlantic Strategic Minerals says the project will strengthen US critical mineral supply chains by providing a domestic source of rare earth elements that are essential for advanced manufacturing, clean energy technology and national security applications.

The company, which is headquartered in Virginia, already mines and processes high-quality ilmenite and zircon, with the monazite project building on this established operational base.

Atlantic Strategic Minerals says it will now engage with relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, industry partners and local communities, to identify strategic partnerships and evaluate development pathways for the monazite demonstration plant that maximises long-term supply chain benefits.
