Tyre Handling Is A Safety Issue, Not Just A Maintenance Task
In busy mining environments, tyre handling is far more than a maintenance activity, it is a critical safety function. Manual tyre handling introduces unnecessary risks, extends equipment downtime and reduces productivity. When investing in tyre handling solutions, mine operators should focus on three key pillars: engineered safety, equipment versatility and dependable local support.
Mining operations are under constant pressure to maximise equipment availability while minimising downtime. Inefficient tyre handling slows maintenance, increases the risk of incidents and keeps critical assets out of service for longer. The result is lost productivity and reduced operational performance.
Deon Verwey, National Technical Specialist for Heavy Lift, a division of CFAO Equipment, says tyre handling involves moving extremely heavy components, often in busy environments where personnel and machinery operate in close proximity.
"When tyres are handled manually or with unsuitable equipment, the risk of injury, equipment damage and operational delays increases significantly."
Large off-the-road (OTR) tyres used on mining equipment can weigh several tonnes, creating significant crush hazards. The kinetic energy generated by a falling tyre can also destroy workshop equipment and cause serious injury.
Conventional lifting methods using cranes, chains and straps introduce further risks. Loads can slip unexpectedly, creating dangerous swing paths and increasing the likelihood of rigging failures.
Tyre inflation and assembly present additional hazards. Multi-piece rims and high-pressure inflation systems can fail catastrophically if not handled correctly. Flying lock rings or rim components can become lethal projectiles if tyres are not properly secured in a safety cage or clamped correctly. Likewise, trapped pressure released during bead seating or tyre demounting can violently destabilise technicians.
Manual handling also exposes workers to significant musculoskeletal injuries. Rolling, pushing and levering heavy tyre assemblies place excessive strain on the back, shoulders and knees, while the confined space between the wheel hub, brake assembly and tyre creates serious pinch and crush points for hands and fingers. Wet, muddy or grease-covered workshop floors further increase the risk of slips and falls around heavy rolling objects.
Mining environments add another layer of complexity. Remote locations, uneven terrain and harsh weather can delay the supply of replacement tyres and specialist technicians while forcing tyre changes to be carried out on soft, sloped or unpaved surfaces where stabilising lifting equipment is more difficult.
Extreme temperatures, dust, mud and moisture also accelerate wear on hydraulic systems and tyre-handling equipment. At the same time, maintenance teams must accommodate a wide range of wheel sizes, from massive haul trucks to smaller support vehicles, often with limited tooling. When a haul truck is sidelined by a tyre failure, production losses can amount to thousands of rands per hour.
Verwey says dedicated tyre handling equipment helps eliminate many of these challenges while improving both safety and productivity.

Purpose-built tyre handlers safely lift, rotate, position and install large tyres with greater precision than manual methods. Features such as continuous 360-degree rotation and side-shift allow operators to align wheel studs quickly without manual repositioning. Hydraulic gripping arms lift, tilt and position tyres in a single controlled movement, eliminating time-consuming crane rigging and strap setups. Tasks that once required several technicians can often be completed safely by a single trained operator.
The result is fewer personnel exposed to hazards, shorter maintenance turnaround times and a lower risk of damaging expensive tyres or equipment. Faster maintenance returns machines to service sooner, improving workshop efficiency and overall mine productivity.
For high-value assets such as haul trucks, quicker tyre changes translate directly into higher equipment availability and increased daily production.
Verwey says reliable equipment must be backed by equally reliable support.

Effective maintenance planning further improves operational performance by allowing tyre changes and servicing to be scheduled before failures occur. Planned maintenance reduces emergency repairs, minimises unplanned downtime and ensures the necessary equipment, technicians and replacement parts are available when required. It also provides more predictable equipment availability while supporting both safety and production targets.
When evaluating tyre handling solutions, operators should look beyond the machine itself. A fit-for-purpose tyre handler must deliver safe, efficient tyre handling, minimise the risk of tyre damage and withstand the demanding conditions of mining operations.
