Coal producer Thungela showcased its leadership in innovative and sustainable coal processing at the ICPC Coal Africa 2025 conference, underscoring the company’s commitment to operational excellence, water stewardship and the development of young talent in the mining sector.

“Thungela is one of the world’s leading coal exporters,” said Thungela head of coal and business improvement Luke Venkatesan, in an interview at the event. “We operate six mines in South Africa and one in Australia, exporting through the Richards Bay Coal Terminal and Gladstone Port.”

The company is also home to one of the world’s most advanced acid mine drainage treatment facilities, capable of processing up to 50-million litres of water a day. This globally awarded plant not only mitigates environmental impacts but also supplies treated water to local municipalities, supporting surrounding communities and closing supply gaps.

Venkatesan described Coal Africa 2025 — hosted in South Africa for the first time in 23 years — as the premier gathering for coal processing engineers, metallurgists, researchers and suppliers to exchange technical insights and innovations. “We’re proud to have seven technical papers presented at this year’s conference, sharing real case studies of how our teams have tackled operational challenges through science, technology and innovation,” he said.

Beyond showcasing its own progress, Thungela views the event as a valuable opportunity to benchmark against global peers and remain at the forefront of emerging technologies. “It’s about understanding leading trends, from process optimisation to digitalisation, and adopting them into our own operations,” Venkatesan explained.

Looking ahead, Thungela is focusing on continuous improvement, automation and data-driven decision-making. The company sees coal processing as an integrated part of the full mining value chain and is investing heavily in AI, data analytics and smart processing technologies to enhance efficiency and sustainability.

Equally important, said Venkatesan, is the investment in young talent. “They are the future technical leaders of this industry. We’re nurturing the next generation of engineers who will drive smarter, cleaner and more sustainable coal processing.”

Despite global energy transitions, Thungela maintains that coal remains an essential component of the global energy mix, especially for developing economies. “Coal is here to stay,” Venkatesan concluded. “Our focus is to make it as clean, efficient and responsible as possible — backed by world-class people and a culture of continuous innovation.”
