Tanzanian govt renews mining licences for Barrick’s North Mara gold mine
The government of Tanzania has renewed Canadian multinational company Barrick Mining Corporation’s special mining licences for the North Mara gold mine for another 15 years.
The company has welcomed this decision by highlighting that the renewal will allow it to keep investing in this mine, its people and its communities over the long term.
“This is an important milestone for North Mara and for our partnership with Tanzania. At the core of our business is building partnerships of real depth and trust with all stakeholders, and this renewal reflects that commitment,” says Barrick Rest of World CEO Seb Bock.
Since Barrick took over operations in 2019, the company says North Mara has increased local employment, expanded economic benefits for nearby communities and strengthened its relationship with local stakeholders, with Tanzanian nationals now making up 96% of the mine’s workforce of about 3 000 and 47% drawn from communities surrounding the mines.
Further, Barrick highlights that it has injected about $5.3-billion into the Tanzanian economy through taxes, royalties, salaries, dividends and local procurement since 2019.
Barrick and the government of Tanzania established Twiga Minerals in 2019 to operate the North Mara and Bulyanhulu mines together, with the government holding a 16% interest in each mine, and the two partners splitting the economic benefits equally.
The company also notes that community development committees help decide which local projects, including schools, clinics and roads, are prioritised.
“Relations at North Mara mine have strengthened since Barrick took over. Residents now really view the mine as a community partner,” says Tarime District Commissioner Major Edward Gowele.
