Shell advances mining reliability through lubrication and technical expertise
Shell Lubricants GM Tshepo Moabelo spoke to Engineering News & Mining Weekly during the Electra Mining Africa event, held in Johannesburg from 7 to 11 September 2026. Camerawork: Shadwyn Dickinson. Editing: Darlene Creamer.
The future of mining in Africa will increasingly be shaped by digitalisation, automation, energy efficiency and more sustainable operations, with equipment reliability becoming critical as mines seek to improve productivity while managing costs and environmental impacts.
Shell is supporting this transition through advanced lubricant solutions, condition monitoring services and technical expertise aimed at maximising equipment reliability, improving operational efficiency and extending asset life.
The company’s customers face a range of challenges, including high operating costs, equipment downtime and harsh operating conditions, while also being expected to meet increasingly stringent sustainability targets. Shell addresses these challenges through high-performance lubricants, oil analysis programmes, lubrication management solutions and technical support services.
These solutions are designed to reduce equipment wear, extend maintenance intervals, improve equipment availability and lower total cost of ownership.
A key differentiator for Shell is its combination of lubricant technology with technical support and customer partnerships. Rather than simply supplying products, the company works with customers to optimise equipment performance through used oil analysis, lubrication surveys, condition monitoring and reliability-focused maintenance programmes.
Electra Mining Africa provides an important platform for Shell to engage with mining industry stakeholders, showcase its technologies and gain insight into the sector’s evolving requirements.
Visitors to the Shell stand can learn more about its lubricant portfolio, technical services and digital tools, while gaining practical insights into reducing operating costs, increasing uptime and protecting critical assets.
Shell’s participation reflects its commitment to helping mining operations become safer, more efficient and more sustainable through effective lubrication strategies and reliability-focused solutions.
