Reliability in Motion: Why Rotary Equipment Deserves More Attention
This article has been supplied.
Every tonne processed, moved or compressed depends on rotating equipment performing as intended. Yet while mobile fleets often dominate maintenance discussions, some of the greatest reliability risks on a mine are found in the gearboxes, compressors, bearings and drive systems operating behind the scenes.
From mineral processing plants and materials handling infrastructure to compressed air networks, rotary equipment performs some of the most critical functions across mining operations.
Unlike mobile fleets, these assets often operate continuously, making reliability essential to maintaining production. When a gearbox or compressor fails unexpectedly, the impact can extend well beyond a single machine, disrupting production, increasing maintenance costs and affecting operational efficiency.
According to Bruce Cooks, Business Development Specialist at FUCHS LUBRICANTS SOUTH AFRICA, these assets are often only recognised when something goes wrong.
"When a haul truck stops, everybody notices immediately," says Cooks. "Rotary equipment tends to operate in the background, but its contribution to an operation is no less important. When a gearbox or compressor fails, the impact can be significant."
The Hidden Workhorses of Mining
Rotating equipment forms part of almost every stage of a mining operation.
Gearboxes drive conveyors and materials handling systems. Compressors support critical plant operations and pneumatic systems, while bearings and drive systems keep essential processing equipment operating efficiently.
Rotary equipment is also found in some of the largest and most critical assets on site, including SAG and ball mill drives, crusher lubrication systems, ventilation fans, stacker/reclaimer systems and overland conveyor gearboxes. In these applications, effective lubrication helps manage heavy loads, reduce wear and support reliable operation under demanding mining conditions.
Although these applications differ, they all share one common requirement: selecting the right lubricant for the operating environment and maintaining it throughout its service life.
Operating under heavy loads, elevated temperatures, continuous duty cycles and harsh environmental conditions places considerable demands on both equipment and lubricants. The right lubrication strategy therefore becomes an important contributor to equipment reliability and long-term asset performance.
Matching the Lubricant to the Application
Not all rotating equipment operates under the same conditions, which is why lubrication requirements vary considerably between applications.
Compressors, for example, require lubricants capable of maintaining reliable performance under demanding operating conditions while helping protect critical components over extended service periods.
For rotary screw, rotary vane, piston and turbo compressors, RENOLIN UNISYN OL is an advanced PAO-based synthetic lubricant that delivers extended oil life, superior wear protection, cleaner operation through reduced deposits and enhanced equipment reliability to help maximise uptime.
For flooded and oil-injected rotary screw compressors, RENOLIN SYNAIR is formulated using premium PG and ester technology, providing excellent thermal stability, extended lubricant life and cleaner compressor operation in demanding industrial environments.
Industrial gearboxes present a different challenge. These systems must manage high loads while protecting gears, bearings and other critical components from wear.
For these applications, RENOLIN CLP provides outstanding load-carrying capability and wear protection for enclosed industrial gear drives, helping support reliable operation across a wide range of mining and industrial equipment.
"The objective is always to match the lubrication solution to the operating requirements of the equipment," explains Cooks. "Different applications place different demands on a lubricant, which is why application knowledge remains essential."
Looking Beyond Lubricant Supply
Selecting the correct lubricant is only one part of an effective reliability programme.
Modern lubrication strategies increasingly incorporate condition monitoring and used oil analysis to provide valuable insight into equipment health. Monitoring lubricant condition, contamination levels and wear metals can help maintenance teams identify developing issues before they result in unexpected failures, allowing maintenance to be planned rather than forced by breakdowns.
For FUCHS, supporting rotary equipment reliability extends beyond lubricant selection. It combines application-specific products with technical expertise, close customer engagement and practical support to help maintenance teams make informed decisions and optimise equipment performance over time.
Small Improvements Deliver Long-Term Results
Unlike major capital projects, improvements in lubrication practices often occur incrementally.
A more suitable lubricant selection, improved thermal stability, better contamination control or longer lubricant service life may appear to be relatively small changes. Over time, however, these improvements can contribute to longer component life, reduced maintenance requirements and more consistent equipment performance.
Lubrication can also contribute to broader operational efficiency. Advances in lubricant technology can help reduce friction, improve equipment efficiency and support longer lubricant service life where appropriate, contributing to lower maintenance requirements and reduced lubricant consumption over the operating life of the equipment.
"Reliable equipment performance is rarely the result of one big decision," says Pollen. "More often, it's achieved through consistently applying good maintenance practices and making informed decisions throughout the life of the equipment."
Rotary equipment may not always receive the same attention as mobile mining fleets, but its contribution to operational performance is fundamental. Protecting these critical assets starts with understanding that lubrication is not simply about keeping components moving. It's about supporting reliability across the entire operation.
