US-based metallurgical coal miner Ramaco Resources has advised that its critical mineral operations executive VP Mike Woloschuk spoke at a plenary session during the International Energy Agency's (IEA's) Coal Industry Advisory Board (CIAB) on October 28, in France, where he addressed the rapidly evolving global critical minerals landscape.

The CIAB is a group of senior executives from coal-related industrial enterprises that provides advice to IEA on a broad range of coal-related issues. Its membership is drawn from more than ten countries representing almost 80% of global coal production and consumption.

Critical-mineral supply and demand has also been among the subjects addressed in recent CIAB plenary discussions.

Ramaco currently has four active metallurgical coal mining complexes in Central Appalachia and one coal mine and rare earths exploration property in Wyoming.

The company also operates a carbon research facility called Ramaco Carbon which is helping to develop coal-to-products research and development. Ramaco believes there is a future in which coal plays a role in non-energy, technology-forward applications, with Ramaco CEO, founder and chairperson Randall Atkins having said coal may one day become too valuable to burn.

He has been advocating for the international development of alternative uses for coal such as replacing petroleum as a cheaper, more environment friendly feedstock in advanced materials such as carbon fiber, graphene and graphite.

Ramaco is also confident about coal's use as a source of critical minerals.

The company hosts a yearly international research conference called Ramaco Research Rodeo in partnership with the International Centre for Sustainable Carbon, discussing carbon-related and critical mineral research.

Meanwhile, Ramaco will release its results for the third quarter on or about November 3.
