New solution guarantees waterproofing for S African roofs
A new, heavy-duty reinforced waterproofing system launched in South Africa by Plascon offers a 12-year guarantee, with applicable terms.
The RubberTUFF coating consists of a rubber-acrylic formulation, engineered to deliver elasticity of up to 400% elongation. As a building's structure expands and contracts with temperature changes, or as existing cracks shift, the material’s properties enable the coating to move, preventing cracking under stress.
The coating is designed to function as both a high-performance roof coating and a dedicated waterproofing membrane. In waterproofing mode, it is said to form a seamless, continuous barrier capable of withstanding water ingress, including on flat or low-pitched areas where water is slow to drain.
RubberTUFF is suited to a range of roofing substrates used on residential and commercial sites, including galvanised iron, Zincalume, Aluzinc and Chromadek sheeting, roof tiles, fibre cement, cementitious surfaces as well as polyvinyl chloride gutters and downpipes. It can be used for both new construction and refurbishment projects and can be applied over previously painted surfaces.
The coating can be applied directly, using a brush, roller or airless spray. A build of two to three coats is recommended for waterproofing applications. A maintenance recoat can be applied to extend the system's life without requiring a great deal of preparation.
