Pan African Resources’ Mogale Tailings Retreatment (MTR), in collaboration with key public and private stakeholders, hosted an inaugural gold tailings career awareness day to attract young people into sustainable mining conservation, bridge the youth unemployment gap and pioneer eco-conscious mining solutions.

The career awareness expo, held at the Mandisa Shiceka Specialised School in the Mogale area on August 20, exposed local students, graduates and job seekers to the rapidly expanding business and environmental sector of gold tailings management, reprocessing and mine rehabilitation.

Historically viewed as simple mining waste, gold tailings can be responsibly reprocessed as a vital pillar of the modern, circular economy.

Through advanced hydromining and grade-control planning, MTR is safely remining old waste dumps to economically extract remaining low-grade gold, while cleaning up the environment.

The event highlighted the critical intersection of technical engineering, environmental safety and data science needed to drive this green mining revolution.

The career awareness day featured a highly interactive programme, including expert-led exhibitions, with direct engagement with environmental engineers, hydrologists, safety managers and drone operators; bursary and internship guidance, with step-by-step application walkthroughs for fully accredited training programmes, local apprenticeships and university funding; and interactive demonstrations, with real-world displays showing how state-of-the-art technology treats and stabilises mine residue areas.

Further, the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy had dedicated mentorship circles looking to accelerate diversity and support students seeking careers in mining and metallurgy.

“We cannot build a sustainable future without bringing our youth to the table and opening up opportunities. Gold tailings management is no longer just about compliance; it is an innovative, technology-driven sector. The initiative equips local talent with portable, high-value skills to prevent economic decay and turn old mining landscapes into safe, productive areas for our communities,” said MTR GM Oriel Shikwambana.

MTR training officer Mlondolozi Makuni added that the career exhibition, with support from the Mining Qualifications Authority, provided learners from disadvantaged communities with guidance, mentorship and insight into opportunities available in the mining sector, while emphasising the role women and youth contribute to the spirit of transformation.

“Pan African Resources, through our MTR operations, looks forward to advancing inclusivity in the sector through collaboration between public and private partners in the West Rand area,” he concluded.
