Africa’s mining industry is facing a fundamental energy question: how can mines meet growing electricity requirements while managing cost, emissions and increasingly complex operations?

For mining operations, energy is more than an operating cost. Reliable and resilient power is fundamental to production continuity, equipment performance and overall operational efficiency. At the same time, many mining sites face complex energy conditions, including remote locations, grid constraints, fluctuating demand and rising electricity costs.

This is creating a need for energy systems that can do more than simply supply power. Mines need to integrate different energy resources, respond to changing load profiles and optimise how energy is generated, stored and consumed.

The technology to support this already exists. But having the technology is one thing. Deploying it effectively is another.

This is the focus of Sungrow’s Mining Microgrid Power Solutions White Paper, developed with TÜV Rheinland and the China Electrotechnical Society. The paper examines a full-stack approach that brings PV, wind, storage, charging and integrated energy management together, with system-level controls coordinating the different assets.

The principle is straight-forward: the value is not simply in having different energy technologies available, but in how effectively they are designed to work together around the requirements of a mining operation.

That starts with under-standing the site. Load profiles, operating conditions and energy requirements influence how generation and storage should be sized and deployed. Intelligent energy management can then coordinate these assets and optimise how energy is used across the operation.

This approach is already being applied in Africa.

In Zambia, Sungrow has deployed a 1.38 MW/2.26 MWh mining microgrid at the Naipu mine, combining renewable generation and energy storage. In Namibia, the 12 MW/13 MWh HyIron Oshivela project operates fully off-grid, using renewable energy and storage to meet the site’s energy demand.

The significance of these projects is not simply that they use solar, storage or other technologies. It is that those technologies are being integrated into an energy system designed around the needs of the operation.

For mining decision makers, this changes the conversation. Instead of asking only how much power a mine needs, the question becomes how different energy resources can be deployed and coordinated to work most effectively for the mine.
Microgrids will not be the answer for every operation. But they offer a way to bring generation, storage, power conversion and energy management together as one coordinated system.

For Africa’s mining industry, the opportunity may therefore not simply be to access more energy technology, but to make better use of the technology already available.
