Merit appointments within local government sphere are an absolute must

Demand for meritocracy within South Africa’s struggling local governments must be emphasised with more force than ever before. Coming with those merit appointments must be insistence on far more transparent reporting processes and the return of ratepayers’ associations to keep a close watch on how money is being spent. Intense vigilance must become the new norm and where municipal skills are lacking, there must be no delay in bringing in structured private sector assistance, again with optimum and ongoing councillor and ratepayer watchfulness. Good municipal models that emerge must be emulated. Failure to achieve major local government improvement must not be tolerated.
