Inclusive leadership reshapes heavy industry

Industrial valve supplier Invincible Valves MD and CEO Pam du Plessis has spent nearly two decades reshaping what leadership looks like in heavy industry, and the results speak for themselves. She arrived at Invincible Valves in 2007 as a contractor building Accpac reports, armed with a background in financial accounting and information technology systems rather than engineering, and simply never left. Within a year she had become a shareholder, and seven years after that she stepped into the role of managing director, a trajectory that has since proven that the right leader need not come from the shop floor in order to transform it.

Her impact on the industry is hard to overstate. Under her direction, Invincible Valves has grown from a specialist in reconditioning and rubber lining into a fully integrated manufacturer and supplier, complete with its own Inval brand and machine shop, serving clients across a broad range of industries worldwide. That growth has not come from Du Plessis alone, but from a hugely qualified team she has recruited, trained, and empowered to perform consistently at a global standard, turning technical expertise into commercial results year after year.

That team sits at the centre of how Du Plessis defines success. She has invested heavily in culture, wellbeing, education and mentorship, building a workplace where people are genuinely equipped to do their best work, and the payoff shows up both in the company's output and in the recognition she has personally received, including the 2024 Business Woman of the Year Award from the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (Seifsa).

Her influence extends well beyond her own boardroom. As a board member of Seifsa, she advocates for transformation, transparency and innovation across the sector, and in doing so has become something of a benchmark for what competence-led leadership can look like in a traditionally male-dominated field. That same conviction runs through Invincible Valves' commitment to learnerships, apprenticeships and accredited training programmes, reflecting her belief that a skilled team is the industry's most valuable asset and one worth building deliberately rather than hoping it materialises on its own. It is a pragmatism that also shows in how the company has weathered power cuts, water constraints and loadshedding, investing in generators and solar solutions to keep operations resilient and delivery reliable for clients.

Looking ahead, Du Plessis is focused on continued diversification, self-sufficient manufacturing, expanded valve and actuator lines, and a stronger regional presence across Africa, an ambitious agenda she seems well placed to deliver given the calibre of the team she has built around her.

In the end, Du Plessis's story is about what happens when visionary leadership meets a genuinely capable team. Her success shows that technical acumen, business savvy, and inclusive leadership are not competing priorities so much as complementary ones, and together they are what reshapes an industry.
